The Seven Principles for Couples in Recovery

Rebuilding Connection After Treatment

A 1-Day Virtual Workshop

Treatment is over. Sobriety is underway. Now the real work of rebuilding life together begins.

For many couples, returning home after treatment can feel like uncharted territory. The partner in recovery may be wondering, “Will my spouse ever trust me again?” Meanwhile, their partner may be asking, “How do I move forward after everything that’s happened?” Both may be committed to recovery, yet still find themselves feeling disconnected, uncertain, or stuck in old patterns.

This virtual workshop is designed specifically for couples navigating life after addiction treatment. Whether the addiction involved alcohol, drugs, or compulsive behaviors, recovery often creates new challenges within the relationship. One partner may be attending meetings, rebuilding routines, and focusing on sobriety, while the other is still carrying hurt, fear, or waiting for the “other shoe to drop.”

Based on the groundbreaking research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman and utilizing The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work curriculum, this workshop provides practical, research-backed tools to help couples strengthen their friendship, rebuild trust, improve communication, and create a healthier foundation for the future.

Led by Brittany Bolden, LMFT, LCAS, Certified Sex Therapist, this interactive workshop combines expert instruction with private exercises for you and your partner. No group sharing is required. Couples will have opportunities to work together in breakout rooms while Brittany provides guidance and support throughout the experience.

Recommended for couples in which one or both partners have maintained approximately six months of recovery following treatment and are ready to focus on strengthening their relationship.

Couples will:

  1. Rebuild trust, respect, affection, and emotional connection.
  2. Gain a deeper understanding of the recovery experience from both the recovering partner’s and the partner’s perspective.
  3. Learn how to communicate about difficult topics without escalating conflict.
  4. Address lingering hurt, fear, resentment, and uncertainty in productive ways.
  5. Develop healthy boundaries while supporting long-term recovery.
  6. Strengthen friendship, intimacy, and teamwork as they move forward together.
  7. Create a shared vision for a relationship that thrives beyond addiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this workshop different from the Art & Science of Love 2-day workshop?

The Seven Principles Program is a 1-day workshop that focuses solely on the seven principles found through Dr. John Gottman’s research to enhance a relationship. This workshop expands upon the invaluable insights in his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, providing couples with practical tools to strengthen their relationship. This particular version is designed for couples in recovery from alcohol, drugs, or behavioral addictions.

In contrast, the Art & Science of Love is an immersive 2-day workshop that includes in-depth exercises, live demonstrations of relationship repair by Drs. Faith Drew and George Bitar, and personalized support based on decades of Gottman research. While both workshops provide transformative relationship-building skills, the Seven Principles Program is a foundational, research-based approach in a single-day format.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for couples in recovery who want to:

  • Rebuild their relationship after addiction
  • Strengthen their partnership while supporting sobriety
  • Gain tools for managing conflict without falling back into destructive patterns
  • Deepen intimacy and joy in their connection

All couples in recovery are welcome, regardless of age, background, or sexual orientation.

Note: This workshop is not a treatment program for addiction or a substitute for therapy. If you are in active crisis, experiencing emotional abuse, or unsafe relationship dynamics, we encourage you to seek individual or couples therapy instead.
